About me

 

I am a husband, a father, a brother, a friend, a Pentecostal pastor, a sociologist, a bridgebuilder, an author, and a public theologian. 

​

I am a university lecturer at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam Faculty of Religion and Theology (FRT-VU), and director for Center for Theology of Migration, the educational program of Samen Kerk in Nederland at the FRT-VU. I am also the founder of the Foundation Academy of Amsterdam, offering higher education in liberal arts and humanities for migrants, refugees, and persecuted minorities.

 

What do I believe?

 

Christianity itself is not my ultimate goal to achieve, nor being called a “great” man of “God”, is my ambition (anymore). I want to be whom Jesus wants me to be; a father who loves his children, a husband who listens, a neighbor who cares, a brother who is there. I want to live! Life is my goal. Life in Jesus & with Others.

 

My passion is to be a humble yet critical voice within Christianity particularly, within Pentecostalism.  I am a dreamer,  advocating for social justice for migrants, especially the undocumented. I love my fellow Pentecostal/Charismatic and traditional believers. Pentecostals are longing to “shake” their countries with the glory of God and they pray for revival in their nations. Unfortunately nowadays, Pentecostal/The Charismatic church has enough superstars, far too many "miracle makers" with private jets and bodyguards, but I am looking for a day when the Pentecostal/Charismatic church will produce Mother Theresas and Martin Luther Kings.

As a Pentecostal pastor, I like signs and wonders, but I love justice more. I like to see the dead are being raised, but love righteousness more. I like to see people feeling “high” in the spirit, but I love to sacrifice more. I may like some tele-evangelists, but I love Jesus more. I like to be touched by the spirit and laugh continually, but I love to cry for justice more. A Christianity that is not standing for the rights of the fragile, for the poor and for the suffering, for the widows and orphans is a worthless Christianity. It is simply a dead religion, even though it has a sign of liveliness. 

 

キリスト教そのものは、私が得たい究極のゴールではありませんし、”偉大なる神の人”と呼ばれることも、（もはや）私の大望ではありません。私は、イエス様が“かくあれかし”と望まれる人間になりたいのです。

子どもたちを愛する父親、話を聴いてあげる夫、よく気遣いをする隣人、そこにいつもいる“兄弟”に――。私は生きたい！ “人生”が私のゴールです。イエスと共に、他者と共にある人生が――。

 

私は、同輩のペンテコステ派／カリスマ派の信者も、在来の教派の信者の方々も愛しています。ペンテコステ派は、自分の国を神様の栄光で”揺り動かす”ことを切望し、母国のリバイバルのために祈っています。残念ながら昨今、ペンテコステ派／カリスマ派の教会には、かなりの数の“スーパースター（大物）”たちがいますし、個人用ジェット機を持ち、ボディーガードを付けた、あまりに多くの“ミラクルメーカー（奇跡の演出人）”たちもいますが、私は、ペンテコステ派／カリスマ派の教会が、やがて“マザー・テレサ”たちや“マーティン・ルーサー・キング”たちを輩出する日が来ることを期待しています。

ペンテコステ派の牧師として、私は“しるし”や“奇跡”が好きですが、それ以上に”正義”を愛します。死者が生き返るのを見ることを好みますが、それ以上に”義”を愛します。人々が霊において“高揚”を感じるのを見たいですが、それよりもっと“犠牲”を愛します。テレビ伝道者にも好きな人はいますが、私はイエス様をもっと愛しています。聖霊に触れていただくこと、頻繁に笑っていることは好きですが、それ以上に、義のために叫ぶことのほうが私には大事です。か弱い者､貧しい者、苦難に遭っている者、やもめやみなしごたちの権利のために立ち上がることのないキリスト教は、価値のないキリスト教です。それは単なる”死せる宗教”にすぎません。たとえそこに“生きている兆候”は認められるにしてもです。～サミュエル・C・リー～
